INTRODUCTION TO THE CAMPAIGN
Dr John Barker is New Zealand's candidate for the role of Director General of the Organisation International de la Vigne et du Vin (OIV). The elections for this role will be held in 2018. Dr Barker’s vision is to reinforce the OIV’s position as the trusted vine and wine reference body for a rapidly changing world. He will bring to the role of Director General the perspective of a career at the forefront of one of most dynamic modern wine countries, combined with a deep and scholarly appreciation of the history and tradition of the global vine and wine sector. He offers a unique combination of legal, management and technical expertise, as well as many years of engagement with the OIV, government and industry throughout the vine and wine world.

Addressing all 46 members of the OIV, Ms Ardern emphasised New Zealand’s strong commitment to the OIV and the high calibre of Dr Barker’s candidacy, saying: “Dr Barker is ideally qualified for this role. He has spent his career at the forefront of this sector and he has a strong vision to carry the OIV into the future. As a candidate, Dr Barker demonstrates the value that New Zealand places upon open, inclusive and forward-looking participation at the international level.”
